End of the Year Progress Report!

End of the Year Progress Report!

Compared to the very beginning of the year or even before I entered high school I didn't realize the importance of physical activity. This year has made me realize how important it actually is. I never knew about stretching your muscles and how to handle weights at the beginning of the year but when I learned I was happy to know something knew. My fitness level was fine, I thought, but I didn't actually know how wrong I was. Before this course, I could only run from 5-6 laps around the park in 30-45 min, but now I can run at least 7-8 in that time.. I think that these improvements have made me and my body healthier and fit.

I also had what you would call a "below-average diet. "I ate only about 5/8 of the actual servings of fruits and veggies every day and I usually had candy but now I eat all servings of the food groups and I make sure to have lots of water every day. I eat less sugary substances and I exercise about 5-6 times a week. There are a lot of improvements that I think I've made over the course of this year with my healthy diets and physical capability.

One of the most important things that I learned this year was pacing. For me, pacing is one of my main priorities now because I realized that in order to keep a steady pace and put all of my effort in, I needed to slow things down a bit  first. What I used to do was take off in the beginning of the run or jog and go all out but I realized at the end that I was extremely tired and wasn't able to put in as much effort as the beginning. My legs were feeling like led, my head was throbbing, my heart feeling like it was going to burst out of my chest. Usually this kind of thing would happen during the community run since there were no exact laps to do so I wasn't able to pace myself. With other things like the pond run or the 30 minute run I can easily time and pace myself to my level of fitness. There are a lot of people who just run to get the class over with but I like to look at things from a mathematical angle and calculate how much time it will take me to run this far and how far I will be able to run if I keep this pace for this certain amount of time. This has helped a lot to realize some of my goals: keep the pace steady for a more exact time measurement. I can achieve this by following some advice: check my stopwatch constantly to see what my timing is and see if I need to slow down or speed up.

Another really important thing I learned this year would be about stretching before an exercise or workout. I used to stretch sometimes before I ever did anything and when I learned that you could pull a muscle that way I was astonished and lucky I never did. I found this to be a really important fact and I liked the example/comparison given with the rubber band. A muscle is like a rubber band put in a freezer. If you stretch it after you take it out it will break but if you warm it up a bit then it will stretch. You need to do a little warm-up exercise before stretching so that your muscles can warm up to stretch. I found this really interesting.

A really fun (but painful) workout for me was Insanity. once I learned how to be "comfortable with being uncomfortable" I learned that it was really quite fun and to do a hard core workout like that helped me gain more physical ability. It was great to encourage and push my friends to push themselves harder. At the end we were all exhausted but satisfied with our outcome.

Another really great exercise for me was the obstacle course. This was by far one of my all-time favorite exercises. It was fun to go through various different obstacles like the yellow bars used for jumping over. I would tell my friends as I passed them to hurry up and encourage them to go faster. It was a fun exercise and I really enjoyed it.

Choice was a good exercise but it was never as exciting as fitness days. I always chose volleyball since it was a personal favorite. At times, I noticed some of my friends would stand around so I changed the game a bit and we alternated positions. I encouraged them to keep their heads in the game and always cheered them on even when they served the volleyball out. I never argued with who was on my team because I was fine to work with anyone. My favorite moment was a few months ago when I took an amazing dive and bumped the ball back onto the opponents' side. We won that game!

I have also gotten involved in many outside school activities. I usually go to the YMCA to run on the treadmill for an hour or I do a workout session of Zumba which takes about an hour as well. My greatest achievement was when I received my scuba diving license and that was an amazing experience for me. (and yes scuba diving is considered a sport)

There are so many great achievements and goals that I have made this year and I hope that next year will bring the same learning experience and even greater accomplishments. I know this will happen for sure though if I put in even more time and effort than this year.

If I were to evaluate myself on my progress this year then I would give myself an A because I think I have put a lot of effort into not just the workouts but the learning experience, strategy, leadership, and being socially responsible.

Diet

My Daily Diet

My diet is simple and healthy and recently my family and I have made plans on how to eat healthier. Usually my morning breakfast would consist of just cereal or some toast and jam (with milk of course). Now I often have some oatmeal with chopped apple slices and just a little bit of syrup to sweeten. It doesn't take that long to make. Just boil some water and mix it in with the ready oats. Here are some pics of me making some.

these are the ingredients needed :)

the finished product!

it was delicious

with a glass of milk of course.

Another healthy meal would be spaghetti with tomato sauce. Homemade of course. My family and I rarely eat out because it's so unhealthy, so many of our meals are homemade and consist of healthy nutrients. spaghetti being a grain product would give us the needed nutrients. Here are some pics of me enjoying the meal we prepared!!! :)

it tasted amazing!

Progress Report

    Progress Report

Compared to the beginning of the year I didn't know about half of he things I have learned and that is a major change for me. I have improved my fitness level entirely and am proud of myself. I workout more often and eat healthier. I have never felt so great but I know that I can achieve even greater things so I continue to push myself to do them. whether its how many push-ups I can do or how many laps I can do on the treadmill. Its always been about raising my standards and when I do I have a new goal to achieve.
last week I ran on the treadmill for about half an hour which is about half the time i usually run for. I had fitness that day so I had done my share of exercise for the day. I just ran for seven laps and tried to focus on pacing myself. For each lap I took around 13 minutes and though I wasn't exact I was closer to being more accurate. In total I did about 8 laps. It wasn't a complete hard core workout session but it was a good exercise to keep fit, which is quite common in my schedule. I think that this is just one example to show that I am improving my quality of effort and activity. Here are some pictures showing my progress between the workout.

Activities outside of school

The other day I went to the Y with one of my friends for a serious workout session and together we did Zumba. it took us a while to get addjusted to the moves but we did eventually. We had a lot of fun and were near exhaustion at the end. Here is a picture of us after the session.

30 Minute Run

The 30 minute run was a great workout and I was able to learn a lot about pacing. At first I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do 6 or 7 laps laps so for the first lap I went off with a nice steady pace to suit my level. My first lap I ended up doing a timing of about 3.5 to 4 minutes. I calculated that since my pacing would be too fast for 6 laps I would be able to complete 7 so I kept running a good steady pace ranging from 3.5 to 4 min. Although I wasn't exact I think I still did well with my timing and I am happy to know that I can pace myself if not perfectly. Using a stopwatch I used the the time to check whether I needed to slow down or speed up. Using this technique I was able to finish exactly when the 30 minutes were up. I was satisfied with the outcome although I feel I can still improve with having a more exact timing for each lap. After the run I was so tired that I was having trouble standing! But I managed to stand and walk around while I was waiting for some of my friends to finish and to cheer them on. I really enjoyed this exercise and I think we should do it again. It's a really good experience to learn how to manage your time. Here is a pic of me after the run.

Capture the flag

A couple weeks ago we played capture the flag. This is personally one of my favourite games and being competitive I love to put my all into it. I almost always play defence in this game and get a lot of people out but I like to see it as more of a fun sporty exercise with which you can experiment with.
I challenge myself to catch the fastest offence of the opposite team. Every time I face that challenge I push myself harder to see if I can achieve this goal. Here is a picture of me running to catch one of those players.

Helping Out

Helping Out

I like to help out sometimes with gym equipment. To set the volleyball nets up or to get the pinneys out. I like to take the initiative to help out with equipment and I should do more often. Here is a pic just showing that I do sometimes help out and not walk off the field chatting with friends.

Community Run!

When I heard we were doing the community run on Tuesday I was pumped and ready to go! It's one of my favorite workout sessions that we do in school. I was determined to beat my record which was 25:35 and I did! I came in at 23:07! I was so happy to see how much I have improved in that area. I hope we can do it again really soon so I can see if I can go faster. It's really important that you should not compete with others but yourself because you may not be at the same skill level as they are. The only person who you're really competing against is yourself and it's your responsibility to raise your standards not to lower them. That's why I raise my standards every time I get to my next goal. Here is a snapshot of a timer I put on although I left it on for a few minutes longer because I was too busy catching my breath! :)

Activities Outside of School

Activities Outside of School

I recently blogged about certian activities I do outside of school. Yesterday I went to the gym and I felt like I needed a good workout so I went to the gym at the Y' and worked out for just over an hour. At one hour I was exhausted but I pushed myself even harder and managed to squeeze in some more hard work. At the end, I was so exhausted my legs felt like lead. I used to only be able to work that hard for about 40-45 min. Now I feel like I've improved alot. Here is a pic after one of the sessions I did on the treadmill.

Hill Run

Hill Run

On friday we did the hill run for active learning and though it`s not as fun a workout as the Community Run I still enjoyed it. The video clip below shows how I put all my effort into the excercise. By the end of the workout I was quite out of breath and my heart rate was 102 beats per minute. It was fun and I think we should have it again. I also try to encourage my friends to push themselves harder. I was dedicated and I never took a single break! :)

Activities Outside of School

Activities Outside of School

There are many activities that I do outside of school. One of them would be I walk to school every day and back up a hill. I often go to the YMCA after school on weekdays and participate in a workout session of Zumba, or go swimming. Here are some pictures I took in one of my Zumba classes. I took these after the session.

This is a pic of the studio.

Eating Right

                                                                        Eating Right

It's important to get allof your serving of veggies and fruits each day so I have an apple almost every single day. On top of that I have various different fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, pineapple, watermelon, and mango. That's seven servings, and the average servings are 7 to 8 for my age.

Although some people might think that pizza is unhealthy it actually provides alot of the nutrients you need. Have too much though and then it bad for you. It provides you with grain products, vegetables, fruits, and meat. In fact I had pizza the other night.

I also love smoothies. I think that they are an excellent source of nutrients. I usually make one after school. I put in various types of fruits and add in milk.

Community Run

                                                                           Community Run

The video is of me and my friend running together during the Community Run. I think it shows that I am able to enjoy active learning and that you can't make others have fun and be happy with the session unless you are enthusiastic about it. I finished with my friend in 27 minutes and 35 seconds. I worked really hard and by the end of the run I was so tired I thought I was going to collapse.  I really enjoy doing the Community Run and I think we should have it more often.

This is a picture of me after the run.

I was exhausted!

Eating Right

Eating Right

Its important to eat right because your body needs the energy. So many people make goals to have a better diet but they always go back to their same eating habits. Junk Food. Everyone loves having some once in a while but if you don't keep to your limit then it becomes a hazard. Water is an important element necessary to every human being and if you don't drink enough then your body will rely on itself for hydration. Milk is also another important source of nutrients because it contains calcium which will not only help your bones but your growth as well. I try to drink at least 2 glasses every day. Other sources of calcium are almonds, yogourt and, cheese. I make all of these part of my diet.
 :)

I love Milk!

Some people also hate vegetables, especially if they are green. Brussel sprouts aren't really my favorite vegetable either. A personal favorite would be spinach. Its a healthy tasty snack because it makes a quick salad.

Fruits are essentail to everyone because they are one of the main source of nutrients as well as one of the tastiest. I recently have a lot of pineapple because it contains vitamin B6 and a special enzyme to help break down protiens. I think it makes a delicious healthy snack.

Its important to have a healthy diet and to make sure you dont eat too much junk food.

Shabnum Bismel's Active Learning Self-Evaluation Grade

Active Learning Self-Evaluation Grade

PE has taken a turning point for me because I feel that I can now push myself harder than before and that I am able to take an extra step when excercising. I have been well prepared except on one occasion and am usually willing to participate and take leadership. I try to push people into working harder some of the time and sometimes make it fun so they can enjoy the activity like in these videos, when we were doing A and B partners.

This proves that I am able to take leadership and am able to make it fun and enjoyable. Excercising is not a  manditory course that you have to take, but it is something to keep you and your body healthy. The amount of effort i put in could also be improved though and I feel I should try even harder to take action so that not only am I helping keep myself active but others as well. An example would be the short clip of me playing volleyball in choice which I wasn't able to upload. I am not a big fan of volleyball myself but I know the rules and am able to make it fun for myself.

I think that I deserve a B with the amount of effort I put in, although I think that I contribute to the overall success of the class pretty well.

Shabnum Bismel's Active Learning Blog Post

   Active Learning Blog Post
Compared to last semester I feel as if I have accomplished much more. There is so much for me to still learn and I am excited to be able to push myself harder. I have always brought in my gym strip and and I am almost always excited to start with the activity. On fitness days I have been able to push myself harder and harder until I come to a certian point where I just cant feel my arms anymore. It's fun to do and I can't wait to start.

On other days when we usually have choice I push myself to compete and win. You should know that I am very competitive and always ambitious to get the gold. Not only with others but with myself as well. I compete to push myself to my limits and even then I tell myself I can keep going. Its tiring but I like to see how much more I will be able to do later on in the course. my favorite days are when there is an obstacle course throughout the hub and the gyms. I always have so much fun on those because I like to see how far I can get with every obstacle. I really think that they are a great way to excersice in an entertaining way. There should be more days where they are are set up.

There have been no days so far that I have been struggling with. Its mostly about how far I can push myself. I try to contribute more now and I help push my friends farther until they reach their limit but some of them do fine on their own and I think that just by having a good attitude, that we could actually enjoy ourselves and have fun.

My fitness goals have also changed becuase not only am I trying to push myself harder in class but outside of school as well. I go to the park everyday and jog, walk or rollerskate for 45 min. Its not hardcore but I do enjoy it and I think it benefits me and helps keep my body healthy.

I think I have done really well and have put in the best my effort into it.

                                          Physical Education Self-Evaluation Grade

During PE this year I think that I have shown that I have been well prepared by bringing in my gym strip almost all the time and am willing to participate in all of the activities, by bringing in a good atitude. I think I have shown alot of optimism towards physical education and am ready to participate everyday. I have participated to my best effort on the days that we have been in the weight room, obstacle courses, and days outside. The days that were a challenge for me were beep tests and the Insanity workout, because it was non-stop action and I wasn't able to show as much effort as I did at the beggining of the workout session.

I think I contribute to the overall success of the class at a medium rate. I push my friends to their limits when they seem to not be as optimistic about the excercise as I am. I always try to get them to put as much effort as they can and if they still aren't paticipating in the activity then I stop because I don't want to force them to do something they don't want to. I always try to have the most optimistic attitude about the class depending on what we are doing. If we are doing an Insanity workout for example then I will be determined to push to my limits, and hang around those who have the same goal. I interact with my classmates pretty well and usually ask them for help if I don't understand the excersise.
My participation level is pretty good I think because I have been able to get myself to succeed in pushing further than I did before. I enjoy playing volleyball, badminton, capture the flag, and doing the pond run. My fitness goals for this year are: to keep pushing myself to my limits, continue swimming, and hopefully work further into scuba diving. Scuba diving is considered a sport.

My definition of Leadership is someone who can commit to helping others as well as themselves. They play a great role in our society by setting good examples for not only the younger people but the older ones as well. There are so many leaders out there that don't even know it and they are making a difference by being a good helpful member of our society by contributing to training, tutoring, teaching, and telling. One really good example of this in our class is Brittany D. who is always trying to push me and Laura to our limits. If I stop for even a minute, she will pick me right back up and tell me to keep going even if it hurts.

I would like to improve in being able to go for a longer period of time without having to stop. I am most proud of the progress I have made in exceeding my fitness level since last year. I am also extremely happy that I know a few of the muscles, and different workout sessions for each one in order to strengthen them.

I think I deserve an A because I think I have proven to myself that I am an active member of the class who is always prepared to begin another session.
